Naomi Semeyian, from Rombo in Kajiado County, was born into a large family where girls were often not considered valued members of society. Naomi’s father, absent for most of her life, saw little value in educating his daughters, instead choosing to marry them off as soon as possible. Naomi’s early life was marred by the threat of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and the prospect of being forced into marriage. The lack of education and harmful cultural practices in her community posed significant barriers to her growth and development, with far-reaching implications for her future and that of other girls like her.
Nice Place Foundation offered Naomi a lifeline after she attended an Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) training. Here, she learned about her rights and the importance of education, gaining the courage to stand up against the harmful practices she faced at home. Nice Leng’ete’s empowering messages resonated deeply with Naomi, inspiring her to take a stand against her father’s plans. When she completed her secondary school education, Naomi was at risk of having her dreams shattered due to the lack of school fees. However, NPF stepped in, offering her a scholarship to study a medical course at the Kenya Medical Training College. This scholarship provided financial support and renewed Naomi’s hope for a better future.
The scholarship program allowed her to pursue and complete a certificate course in Health Records and Information Technology in February 2024 and enrol in a diploma course at KMTC Nairobi. Naomi is a beneficiary of the AjiraForShe Apprenticeship Partnership Program with NPF. This has allowed her to gain skills in online work and earn an income. Upon completing her diploma, she aspires to continue advocating for the rights of girls and women as she works to support her community in Rombo.
Naomi’s story is a powerful example of how access to education and supportive networks can help girls defy the odds and reclaim their futures. Her journey from a girl at risk of FGM/C and forced marriage to a confident medical student is a testament to the life-changing impact of NPF’s programs.
Her progress highlights the importance of investing in education and empowering girls in vulnerable communities. It illustrates the potential for broader societal change when girls are given the tools to advocate for themselves and pursue their dreams. NPF’s work provides a blueprint for effectively combating harmful practices and supporting the next generation of women leaders.
